The window for it is October or November, before the gritters are out in numbers, which is why it is worth raising now. On a plan it simply goes on at the next visit that falls in that window.

Salt and traffic film then sit on protection rather than gripping bare paint, so more of the dirt leaves during the pre-wash and less has to be removed by contact. That makes each winter visit quicker and less abrasive, which counts for most on cars doing daily runs along the wet, gritted lanes of the valley.
